OSCE Chairman to participate in International Conference on Afghanistan

Kazakh Foreign Minister and OSCE Chairman Kanat Saudabayev will participate in an International Conference on Afghanistan in London Jan. 28, Askar Abdrakhmanov, foreign ministry official, said in Astana.

Saudabayev was invited by British Foreign Minister David Miliband.

"During the event it is planned to discuss four important issues: the strengthening of military security, the promotion of economic development of Afghanistan, participation of the regional neighbors in stabilizing the political and military situation in Afghanistan, as well as process of for ensuring security in the country," Abdrakhmanov said.

According to Abdrakhmanov, Saudabayev will discuss measures to help the Afghani people and possible expansion of OSCE's contribution in strengthening peaceful life in Afghanistan. 

"In the context of the Kazakh initiative to make the Afghan issue one of the organization's priorities in 2010, the foreign minister will inform the participants of the conference about Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's initiative to hold an OSCE summit in 2010," he said.

Abdrakhmanov said that one of the main subjects of this forum could be the situation in Afghanistan. Especially given the fact that today 43 of the 56 OSCE member countries have already been involved in the processes of stabilization and reconstruction of Afghanistan.

"Within the conference, meetings with Saudabayev's foreign counterparts are also planned," he added.
