The need to gradually transfer responsibility to the Afghan authorities and more effectively coordinate international efforts and closer cooperation with regional countries has arisen to solve socio-economic issues in Afghanistan, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said in a joint statement published today in Turkmen media.
The Turkmen president was on his first official visit to Paris Feb. 1-3.
"The restoration of this country is essential for stability and the further development of Central Asia," the statement read.
The leaders also expressed the need to intensify combat drug trafficking and their satisfaction in connection with the contribution of EU programs on the prevention of drug trafficking in Central Asia and on promotion of border control in the region.
Both sides confirmed their determination to implement Resolution No. 1817 of the U.N. Security Council on combating the illicit trafficking of precursors and to continue to cooperate within the Paris Pact.
Turkmenistan is Afghanistan's neighbor and connects its the country with the possibility to transport natural gas to India and Pakistan.
