Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 9 / Trend A. Huseynbala /
Azerbaijan showed problems and challenges of global security at the Munich Conference on Security, Aydin Mirzazade, New Azerbaijan Party member, said in an interview.
"Azerbaijan plays an important role in ensuring Europe's energy security. Participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the Munich Conference on Security, of course, shows the contribution that could include Azerbaijan in a world system of security," the MP said.
Such important issues as the situation in Afghanistan, NATO's role and problems of global security were discussed in Munich.
"However, participants paid special attention to the issues raised by the president of Azerbaijan," the MP said.
The Munich security conference is held every year and it is a forum for world security issues.
"The world community was informed about the Nagorno Karabakh issue. It is a major unsolved problem in Azerbaijan. From this perspective, the statement of President Ilham Aliyev at the conference was listened with great interest. The president of Azerbaijan expressed the country's readiness to cooperate with Europe on the issue of energy security. At the moment, Azerbaijan's main problem is Armenian aggression. During discussions it became clear that the world is interested in solving this problem. During the conference the head of the country pointed out again that Azerbaijan will never agree with the independence of Nagorno Karabakh," Mirzazade said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a cease-fire agreement in 1994.
The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.
