Presidents of Uzbekistan and South Korea hold negotiations

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Uzbek President Islam Karimov exchanged views today on developing and strengthening bilateral, regional and international cooperation of mutual interest, Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry said.

The summit was held within Islam Karimov's official visit to South Korea.

The two presidents expressed satisfaction with the progressive development of bilateral relations in political, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres, the Foreign Ministry said.

The sides evaluated the expansion of a mutually beneficial cooperation in the oil, gas, petrochemical, construction ICT, agriculture, ecological and textile sectors.

The presidents noted the increasing cooperation in the energy and raw materials sectors, proven by the signing of an agreement to conduct geological prospecting operations on additional Western Ferghana and Chinabad blocks.

They discussed the construction of a gas-chemical complex on the Surgil field and agreed to intensify cooperation in the sphere of green development, in particular, liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The sides agreed that the development of the Navoi project, a free industrial-economic zone, is a perspective direction of bilateral cooperation.

President Myung-bak said that Uzbekistan has been chosen as a key state to be supported under a knowledge-sharing program in 2010 and underscored plans for an active transmission of Korean development experience in macro economy management, innovation stimulation, exports and investment.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in culture, sport and tourism. The sides welcomed intentions to create a Seoul Park in Tashkent.

President Myung-bak expressed his gratitude for supporting the candidacy of PyeongChang for the Winter Olympic Games in 2018.

The leaders vowed that the sides share the common view that full denuclearization of North Korea is important for peace and stability in northeast Asia.

Uzbek and Korean leaders expressed hope that the situation in Afghanistan will stabilize.

President Myung-bak has accepted Karimov's invitation to visit Uzbekistan.
