Bakuriani street to be named after Georgian athlete after death in Vancouver

A Bakuriani street will be named after Nodar Kumaritahsvili who died tragically in the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The decision was adopted by the Bakuriani settlement council.

The athlete's body was brought home this morning. Today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow civil funeral rites will be held, and a funeral will be held on Saturday. Kumaritashvili will be buried at the Blessed Virgin Church, which is under construction in the settlement.

The athlete's coffin was brought to Tbilisi from Vancouver today at 03:15. His relatives and friends, as well as officials, met him at the airport.

The government has taken all the costs upon itself. The Georgian Culture Ministry has also established the Nodar Kumaritashvili Fund.

Kumaritashvili died Friday after losing control of his sled and colliding into a metal pillar.
