Interior minister: Number of offences in law enforcement agencies decreased in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb.23 / Trend , K. Zarbaliyeva /

Number of offences in law enforcement agencies decreased by seven percent compared to 2008, Interior Minister Ramil Usubov said in an interview to the Azerbaijan state newspaper.

According to the minister, the number of offenses on criminal responsibility in law enforcement agencies also decreased by 10.7 percent.

In 2009, the total number of appeals in connection with the activities of interior agencies and personnel decreased by 2.6 percent, number of appeals received from the Presidential Administration by 13 percent.

Expressing regret that despite the conducted measures, various offences, deficiencies and shortages in the activity of various services' employees can still be faced, the minister stressed that 614 police officers were punished for violating the rights of the citizens over the past three years.

"Sixteen of them were made criminally responsible, 85 were dismissed, five police officers were deprived of their ranks. Other administrative measures have been taken with regards to 442 police officers," the minister said.

The minister said due to continuous monitoring, the public's attitude towards the law enforcement agencies is determined, and this process assumes great importance for the Ministry.

"Through monitoring, we reveal shortages in our activity, and make the necessary conclusions. One of the effective means of studying the society's attitude is to conduct surveys. The latest survey showed that 80 percent of respondents were satisfied with the situation in the sphere of combating crime in the country. Another source of information for us is objective and impartial critical articles issued in the media outlets. These materials are also carefully studied by us and the necessary measures are taken," Usubov said.
