Georgia, Tbilisi, Feb.26/ Trend , N. Kirtskhalia /
The Georgian authorities set themselves the task of establishing modernized Georgia, Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili said in his annual address to the Parliament.
"2009 was the most difficult year for our country during the recent years, and it was determined by three factors - Russia's aggression in 2008, when the country suffered from irreparable economic loss; global crisis, which also hit the economy; and domestic political instability, which showed itself in April-May 2009, when the center of Tbilisi was paralyzed by different destructive forces," Saakashvili said.
Saakashvili stressed that 2009 was the year of tough test, when the question arose on the whole state's survival. "The state was able to fulfill all its obligations before the citizens, which many more developed countries could not make. Despite the chaos, we managed to maintain stability in the country and to protect the sovereignty and freedom, despite the efforts of our enemies destroy our state. This is thanks to multiethnic people of Georgia, which has never ceased to defend their country," he stated.
Georgian President from the Parliament's tribune thanked the Georgian people for their courage of preserving unity and repulsing the enemy. "We have seen an enemy who violently tried to annihilate us, and friends who supported us during this yea. And thank you for your unity to keep the country away from violence and chaos, and the nation who support both the Government and the opposition", Saakashvili said.
The President once again stressed that Georgia is a multiethnic country and all ethnic groups, along with the Georgians deserve his gratitude. "We have stopped falling and we will now go forward. We can speak with confidence that we suffered from crisis, and after a five percent decline at the end of 2009, we are once again moving forward to stop recession," the President said.
At the President's request Parliament thanked the people by standing.
