Azerbaijani official: Country's Security Services derive from illicit trafficking over one ton of drugs

The Azerbaijani National Security Services seized over one ton of drugs in 2009 from illicit trafficking, Deputy National Security Minister, Major-General Ali Shafiyev said at a conference on "Role of Youth in National Security," which was held at the Baku Slavic University on the eve of ninety-first anniversary of the organ.

The ministry also held successful operations to combat transnational organized crime last year. Many organized groups and criminals were detained who have been engaged in drug trafficking, said the deputy minister.

According to Shafiyev, 25 people were neutralized by foreign intelligence agencies in 2009.

The deputy minister stressed the ministry's successful activities in recent years to protect state interests. According to the official, a ministry priority is to create favorable conditions for the political course of the country's leadership to restore Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.

"Successive actions also have been taken to improve the potency of the fight against terrorism and aggressive separatism, which are supported by the invasive Armenia at the state level. As a result of actions to combat international terrorism attempts, terrorist acts in the country were prevented. A number of extremist groups working with terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and al-Jihad were deactivated," Shafiyev said.

Concerning the ministry's international relations, Shafiyev said activities were conducted to combat foreign intelligence, disrupt terrorist and subversive activities, and curtail illicit drug trafficking and other transnational organized crime. The ministry cooperates with 51 special services from 40 countries worldwide.
