Romanian president: Georgia can join NATO without IDA

Georgia, Tbilisi, June 3 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

Georgia's accession to NATO is possible without an IDA action plan, Romanian President Traian Basesku said at a briefing with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in Bucharest.

Georgian media reported that Basesku and Saakashvili discussed at the meeting Georgia's joining NATO, frozen conflicts and economic issues.

"I want to note that the recognition of Kosovo cannot be a precedent for Georgia," Basesku said.

"Our position has not changed and we are convinced that Georgia will become a NATO member. We cannot give an exact date, but Georgia's membership in NATO is possible without an IDA action plan," Basesku said.

He also noted that as of Georgia's local elections May 30, the country "has doubled its struggle in terms of political security, stability and deepening of democratic processes."
