Georgia celebrates Unity Day

Georgia, Tbilisi, Sept.1 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /

Georgia celebrates Unity Day today. The holiday was announced by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili Sept. 1, 2008 after the war with Russia in August 2008.

Over 1.5 million people from throughout Georgia gathered on Freedom Square two years ago to listen to the president. He said that Sept. 1 would hence forth be known as Unity Day.

"Georgia was unjustly attacked, and those who want freedom and independence were expelled from their homes, but we once again will unite and stand united," Saakashvili said.
