Georgian FM responds to Russia's new 'maps'

Georgia, Tbilisi, Sept.2 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /

Russia is a member of the international community and must not commit "map fraud," the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement today. Russia recently released a series of maps depicting Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.

"Legitimizing the so-called 'independence' of these regimes has become an obsession for Russia after the military aggression committed against Georgia in August 2008," the report said.

Nonetheless, the international community has unequivocally refused to legitimize Russia's crimes despite repeated attempts by the Kremlin to do so, the statement said. Russia has even resorted to financial bribery, it added.

"It is unclear who these 'maps' were made for," the statement said. "If they were designed for the Russian occupation forces, then 4,000 maps are far too few and the publishers should urgently print another 6,000 copies to satisfy Russia's contingent of 10,000 troops. But if they are meant for the international community, then millions would not be enough to change its attitude toward the occupied territories of Georgia."
