Former Georgian Education Ministry officials jailed

Two former high-ranking officials of the Georgian Ministry of Education and Science have been sentenced to two months in prison by the Tbilisi City Court. In sentencing, the judge imposed the punishment requested by the prosecutor.

David Mamardashvili, the former head of finance and budget department at the ministry and Zviad Kikvadze, the ministry's former head of economic management, were convicted of the crime of "malicious use of official authority" under Article 332 of the Penal Code.

Mamardashvili and Kikvadze were detained in connection with an unlawful procurement by the Education and Science Ministry in 2008.
