Georgian public defender speaks out for refugee rights

Georgia, Tbilisi, Sept.3 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /

Georgian Public Defender George Tugushi met with Refugees and Resettlement Minister Koba Subeliani today. The meeting was held upon Tugushi's initiative.

The public figures discussed topical issues, such as protecting refugee rights. They also addressed the eviction of refugees from their temporary residences in central Tbilisi.

The public defender noted that the resettlement process should not violate refugee rights. The refugees should be informed about the resettlement process, and future evictions should not be conducted in a chaotic manner. The refugees should also know where and under what conditions they will live after their resettlement, Tugushi said.

Tugushi and Subeliani also spoke about providing compensation to refugees, as well as issues of privatization and rehabilitation, public education and health.

Tugushi reiterated that protecting refugee rights is a priority for his staff, and it is vital for all refugee-related activities be held in a transparent and legal manner.
