The Israeli government is not interested in launching hostilities on northern and southern fronts, a member of the Israeli parliament from the Arab National Democratic Union bloc, Khanin Zoabi, has said.
"It is impossible for Israel to declare the war on southern and northern fronts with Iran and Lebanon," Zoabi told Trend in a telephone interview. She was commenting on the possibility of Israeli starting a new regional war with Iran and Arab countries.
The Israeli MP thinks that Israel is trying to avoid another war on the border with Lebanon. Despite recent bloody clashes on the border between Lebanon and Israeli armies, in which three Lebanese soldiers and an Israeli officer were killed, Israel would not want to repeat scenario of the second Lebanon war in 2006.
The country does not seek a military solution to a potential threat posed by Iran's civil nuclear energy program, which some believe to be a covert weapons program, Zoabi said.
"Israel still uses alternative means of pressure on Iran such as political and economic pressure, considering these measures more effective", the MP said.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad expressed his confidence that the U.S. and Israel will not wage a war against Tehran at a recent press conference in Qatar. But he said pressure on Iran was a "psychological" attack.
Scenarios for a possible attack on Iran by Israel and the U.S. are gaining currency in the world's media with U.S magazine Atlantic Monthly recently publishing an article in which the author contends there is 50 percent probability that Israel will attack Iranian nuclear facilities.
Israel and Western countries fear that Iran is developing nuclear weapons which it would use it against Israel. Israel has threatened to use its air force to attack Iranian nuclear facilities.
However Zoabi believes that Israel will continue to work to toughen economic and political sanctions against Iran.
In June, the UN Security Council adopted six resolutions imposing new economic sanctions against Iran over its refusal to cease its uranium enrichment activity in the country.
The Israeli MP considers these sanctions a direct way to undermine stability in Iranian society.
"Sooner or later, these sanctions will lead to a split within Iranian society. They will weaken Iran from the inside," Zoabi said.
However, it will not weaken the vigilance of Israel, she said. It will continue to arm itself to defend itself in a possible regional war. In future, Israel will increase the volume of its purchases of weapons, turning more and more into a militarized state, she said.
