Presidential elections in Belarus are an important political event for the Belarusian society and state, Belarusian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Nikolai Paskevich said at a press conference today.

The elections took place on the basis of the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus, which provide and expand opportunities for candidates to hold campaigns and organize pickets and meetings with voters, he said.

Belarus held presidential elections on Dec. 19. According to preliminary data from the Belarusian Central Election Commission, 79.67 percent of voters voted for Lukashenko.

"Additional measures were taken to ensure security and increasing confidence in the process of early voting. Candidates were provided with additional guarantees for challenging the election results by increasing the time period for filing complaints.

The efficiency of the judicial protection of electoral rights was increased. All these measures were aimed at holding democratic and transparent elections in accordance with the national legislation of the Republic of Belarus, and to observe international obligations and standards in a proper manner," the diplomat noted.

There was no tension throughout the campaign, and observers didn't find any serious deficiencies in the organization of the electoral process, he said.
