The counterintelligence department of the Georgian Interior Ministry has detained organized armed gang that attempted to destabilize the situation in Georgia.
Totally eight people have been arrested, several people are wanted, detective Giorgi Buhrashvili said to a briefing. "Several people from this gang were associated with "the Georgian party" and its leader Irakli Okruashvili and had prepared acts of violence in Georgia in late May of this year," he said.
Georgian Interior Ministry has presented a confession of one of the detained Giorgi Sabashvili. He admitted that he was hired as a driver and had to ensure the transfer of a number of Russian special forces to Georgia.
Sabashvili admitted that in Georgia, the gang included several former policemen and financial policemen, as well as former security guards. "The gang members conducted a meeting in Vladikavkaz with Irakli Okruashvili, who planned, together with 200 special forces from Russia, to enter the territory of Georgia and together with 20 militants who joined him here, to attack the police and Georgian special forces in Gori," he said.
The Interior Ministry also spread testimonies of detainees Giorgi Saatashvili, David Shiukashvili and Khvicha Macharashvili, who also admitted preparing an armed attack. Also tapes of telephone conversations proving the intention of the detainees were spread.
The detainees are accused under Article 223 of the Criminal Code of Georgia - the creation of illegal armed groups.
Yesterday, the chairman of "the Georgian party" Sozar Subari made a statement, saying that some party members were detained on charges of buying weapons. He accused the authorities of putting pressure on the opposition party.
