Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 13 / Trend /

A project on redirecting water from the Araz River to Lake Urmia will soon be launched, the vice president and head of the Environmental Protection Organization in Iran, Mohammad-Javad Mohammadizadeh, was quoted by irib as saying.

He said that the contractor for the project has been decided on and will come from the private sector. The company expects to receive the funds allocated for the project.

Mohammadizadeh said that the problem of Lake Urmia will be solved with the five-year program, with more than $900 million having been allocated to ensure this.

Iran has not officially appealed to Azerbaijan regarding the use of the Araz River waters to prevent Lake Urmia from drying out, the Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyngulu Bagirov told journalists on Sept. 7.

"If in fact there is such an intention, Iran must coordinate the issue with Azerbaijan," Bagirov said, stressing that Iran and Azerbaijan have made an agreement on the use of waters of the Araz River.
