The President of Georgia expresses his gratitude to the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama for support for the democratization of the country.
"The Obama administration, like you, has always been our great friend, and we enjoyed your steadfast support, especially in the protection of our sovereignty and territorial integrity," Mikheil Saakashvili said at a joint press conference with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Batumi on Tuesday.
"You have always been our friend, and on behalf of the Georgian people, I want to thank you for supporting the young democracy in Georgia. Georgia is developing every day, and this is, first of all, thanks to the courage of the Georgian people, but in recent years, support of U.S. President Barack Obama was important to protect our territorial integrity and sovereignty," he said.
Saakashvili stressed he is grateful to the United States for the unwavering stance on the occupied territories.
"This concerns, first of all, recognition of the occupation and the rights of refugees to return to their homes," he said.
Saakashvili stressed that the partnership and support of the U.S. are due to common principles and ideology that unites the American and Georgian peoples.
Georgia's President highlighted the support of the United States in ensuring the defense of Georgia and free trade with Georgia. "These are very important issues for the development of our country, and in this respect we have already taken steps inspiring great optimism," Saakashvili said, thanking the U.S. for its support towards Georgia's integration into NATO.
