Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct.18 / Trend, R. Hafizoglu/
The European Union's sanctions against Syria are directed against the Syrian people and mean open support for terrorists, the country's Foreign Ministry said in its statement.
As Syrian agency SANA reported on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry's statement also says that the EU sanctions have no legal basis and are contrary to international law.
The European Union adopted new sanctions against Damascus on Oct.16. The new sanctions package includes a ban on the insurance of air and sea supply of weapons to Syria through third countries, also a "black list", which includes another 28 Syrian officials, who are banned from entering the EU, was expanded.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
