MP: Hidden rivalry between Musavat and APFP opposition parties

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 22 / Trend E. Mehdiyev /

Chairman of the Ana Vatan Party considers it impossible for opposition parties to nominate a single candidate to take part in the upcoming presidential elections in Azerbaijan.

In general, the associations formed in the opposition are unsuccessful due to internal controversy and contradictions, chairman of Ana Vatan and Milli Majlis (Parliament) deputy Fazail Aghamali told Trend.

"Take a look at what is happening with the opposition, namely the so-called Public Chamber. Indeed, there is a latent rivalry between the parties Musavat and APFP," Aghamali said.

It has always been, is and will be this way because there is no common ground between these parties, no overall direction and each is trying to promote itself at the expense of another party, he said.
The nomination of Gambar, who never waited until the decision of the so-called Public Chamber, was met with resistance from the Popular Front, the chairman of the party said.

"It is Gambar's hastiness and utopian statements on the perception of Ali Karimli's candidacy as a single candidate that turned the Popular Front and the Musavat to each other," Aghamali said.

These tactics may conceal the intention of the APFP to take advantage of the situation and blame on the one hand, the government and on the other, Isa Gambar, and refuse from taking part in the elections," Aghamali said.

"All this is to be expected. Gambar's chances in the upcoming presidential elections in Azerbaijan, to say the least are not encouraging and his loss is inevitable. Observations conducted show that in general, the social base of the opposition doesn't exceed 20 per cent. Given the multipolar nature of opposition, this 20 per cent will be divided and distributed amongst all opposition parties," Aghamali said.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for the autumn.
