Press adviser to the Iranian President Ali Akbar Javanfekr withdrew his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election two days after registration, the Iranian news agency Mehr reported on Monday.

Following this announcement, Javanfekr called on his supporters to support the candidacy of Isfendiyar Rahim Mashaei, who is backed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The former director of the state news agency IRNA Dzhavafekr was arrested for violations of Islamic norms and the values of humanism in September last year and was criticized by the supreme spiritual leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei. He was punished with probation for one year and banned from participating in a number of public activities for five years. Later on, he was acquitted and rehabilitated.

"By nominating myself, I would like to demonstrate to those who unjustly accused me and threw me into prison, that whatever they have done has not lessened my desire to serve the motherland. They did not break my will. On the contrary, I am seriously prepared to carry out extensive work with even greater determination," Javanfekr said.

He called on the Iranian people to vote for Rahim Mashaei for the sake of their development and future.

On May 11, Ahmadinejad accompanied the head of his office and the father-in-law of his son, Isfandiar Rahim Mashaei, during the latter's registration at the Iranian Foreign Ministry. This gesture of his was ambiguously met by MPs. Parliamentary representatives have appealed to the court to consider the violations on the part of Ahmadinejad due to his "clear support" to Mashaei's candidacy.

Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi also withdrew his candidacy from the presidential election two days after the registration.
