President: Even latest developments in Turkey mean a test of Turkish democracy

Turkish President Abdullah Gul, regarding Taksim Gezi Park protests, said "Even the latest developments in Turkey meant a test of Turkish democracy", Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Rize province said legal and democratic norms in Turkey have improved and that's why democratic standards in Turkey now reached the level of European Union.

Regarding Taksim Gezi Park protests, Gul said "Even the latest developments in Turkey meant a test of Turkish democracy".

Reminding that people suddenly revolted on Wall Street two years ago in the United States, Gul said "the protests took place in Wall Street and they occupied universities and police intervened in them. What you saw on televisions related with Taksim last night was similar to what happened in New York and Spain. Therefore, what happened in Turkey was similar to what happened in the most developed countries. We have to make this differentiation very well".

Gul added "while there are economic turbulance in Europe and people have taken to the streets, Turkey has grown 5 times more than Europe in past 10 years".

For more than two weeks, protests have been continuing in various Turkish cities. According to representatives of Turkish authorities, the protests already have an anti-government character.
