The demonstrations must be stopped in the Turkish cities in the shortest possible time, Turkish President Abdullah Gul told media today, TRT Haber TV channel reported.

He added that anyone who requires reforms and change must demand this democratically, rather than through robbery.

"We must avoid any actions that harm Turkey's image and reputation," Gul said.

Protests have been continuing in Turkey for more than 20 days. According to the authorities, they are anti-government. Turkey's opposition parties accuse the police of using excessive force against protesters.

Earlier, Turkish Interior Minister said an investigation is underway in connection with the use of excessive force against protesters.
