Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 23 /Trend E. Mehtiev /
Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan Mazahir Panahov expressed his views in relation to the National Council's single candidate, Rustam Ibrahimbeyov.
The requirement on the absence of dual citizenship is the requirement of Azerbaijan's Constitution, Panahov told journalists on Friday.
"The Constitution has several requirements for those who want to become the president of Azerbaijan, and one of the main requirements is that a citizen who has dual citizenship, obligations to other countries can not become the president of Azerbaijan. It means that, it is the requirement of the Constitution of Azerbaijan, and therefore these issues should be dealt with under the conditions allowed by legislation. There is no any other way in this case," Panahov said.
Panahov added that yesterday Rustam Ibrahimbeyov's documents were sent to the CEC.
"The process of reviewing these documents has started today. The candidate's name, surname and identity do not matter to us. That is, a person who has the right to become the president of Azerbaijan is free to take steps in this direction and may apply to the CEC. We need to consider this issue in five days and you will witness what decision will be made by the commission," CEC Chairman said.
