Azerbaijan supports the UN General Assembly resolution on the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria, country's Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said, speaking in New York at the UN General Assembly meeting on the situation in Syria.

Azerbaijan hopes that a unanimous and decisive position, which was demonstrated by the UN Security Council, will contribute to the search for a political solution to the conflict in Syria, put an end to sufferings of the Syrian people and ensure fulfillment of the obligations of the parties in accordance with international law, Mammadyarov said.

On Friday the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on destruction of Syria's chemical weapons. The resolution said that measures will be taken in accordance with the UN Charter Chapter VII in case if the resolution is not fulfilled, as well as in case of illegal transfer of chemical weapons and use of them by anyone in Syria.

Baku strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons and killing of civilian population, the Minister said.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister also said that this resolution reaffirms that the use of chemical weapons is a violation of international law and a threat to international peace and security.

According to Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, UN Security Council's support for sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria is of particular importance.
