A CIS short term observation mission for the Azerbaijani presidential election led by chairman of the executive committee and the organisation's Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev arrived in the country, the mission's headquarters told Trend on Monday.
According to the headquarters, the mission head began work on Monday morning. The programme includes: the study of the pre-election situation in the country and meeting with officials and presidential candidates.
The presidential election in Azerbaijan is scheduled for October 9.
The long term CIS observation mission for the presidential election in Azerbaijan started its work on September 10 with the opening of the mission's headquarters.
The two missions include nearly 300 observers representing Belarus, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, the Ukraine and the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia, as well as the CIS Executive Committee.
The CIS observation mission and its headquarters are to continue observing the process of the pre-election campaign.
The presidential elections in Azerbaijan are held every five years.
Azerbaijani citizens who have higher education, who have been permanently residing in the country for more than 10 years, who have not been convicted on a serious crime, not having any obligations to other states and those who do not have double citizenship are entitled to the right to be elected to the post of president of Azerbaijan.
Previous presidential elections were held on October 15, 2008.
