The presidential elections of 2013 became a major step forward towards democratic establishment, and towards creation of truly free society and rule of law in Azerbaijan, head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev said in his interview to a number of Azerbaijani news agencies.

"The elections were held with high civic and electoral activity, something that the 72 percent-exceeding quorum figures showcase clearly," Mehdiyev said, adding that high voter turnout was observed almost all over the country.

He said that people were voting, realizing that the future of the country, further path of socio-economic reforms and the fate of stability and development, which were the results of titanic efforts of Azerbaijani authorities, depend completely on them.

Mehdiyev said that everyone who observed the election and all those who participated in it, had opportunity to make sure that Azerbaijan's political and democratic institutions, the Central Electoral Commission, as well as structures of civil society, did everything in their power for the elections to meet the highest standards.

"Today, I am happy to note that the atmosphere of transparency, and observance of fundamental democracy principles created all necessary conditions for free expression of will," Mehdiyev said.

He went on to note that the fact that irreconcilable opposition didn't present the public even one fake bulletin after the polls shows that the elections were transparent and fair.

"The results of the elections eloquently showcase the mood of electoral masses, and show what Azerbaijani people want," Mehdiyev noted.

"Activity of the voters as well as voting results have shown that the majority of country's citizens has overwhelmingly supported the policy of sustainable development, which was offered by the candidate of the ruling the New Azerbaijan Party Ilham Aliyev," Mehdiyev said. "Ilham Aliyev's name is inseparably connected with fundamental social and economic achievements of the country, which were gained in the past decade."

According to Mehdiyev, it is encouraging that there is a civic, social and political activity in Azerbaijan, and people consciously support innovation, making the best choice.

"I want to emphasize, that the majority of those who gave their votes to Ilham Aliyev, are compatriots for whom a consistent consolidation of the national state is a matter of fateful importance," Mehdiyev said. "This means that our coevals appreciate the efforts of the Azerbaijani leadership on implementation of grandiose renovation program that is systematically being realized, visibly improving the quality of people's lives."

"The results of the recent presidential election have shown that the national electorate appreciated Ilham Aliyev's activities aimed at strengthening the state, developing a socially oriented economy and improving the well-being of the population," Mehdiyev said. "Therefore the results of polls, during which 84.55 percent of voters chose the current president, may be regarded as highly regular and fair."

Presidential election was held in Azerbaijan on October 9. According to the preliminary results announced by Azerbaijani Central Election Commission, the Head of State, candidate of the ruling the New Azerbaijan Party, Ilham Aliyev gained 84.55 percent of votes (3,126,612 votes).
