Iraqi Foreign Ministry: Political crisis between Baghdad and Ankara had no trade impact

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said during his official visit to Turkey that the political crisis which has lasted for over two years between Ankara and Baghdad didn't significantly affect trade relations, the Anadolu agency said on Friday.

According to the Iraqi Foreign Minister Turkey is the second trading partner of Iraq after Germany.

He also added that if the problems are not resolved now, it will be more difficult to settle them in the future.

Tension has been observed in relations between Iraq and Turkey for more than a year. Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said that Turkey is turning into an enemy to all states in the region due to its attempts to 'dominate' it and 'to intervene in the affairs of its neighbours'.

In response, Erdogan said that Iraq should in the first instance sort out its internal affairs before it accuses the neighbouring countries of hostility.

Energy cooperation between Turkey and the Kurdish autonomy of Iraq increased tension in their relations. The Turkish side has made statements in recent months that Turkey is not going to refuse cooperation with the Kurdish autonomy of Iraq in the oil and gas spheres.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Ankara considers the desire of Iraq for political association and strengthening of partnership with Turkey as unconvincing.
