Serbian ex-president: International community should concentrate on solving conflicts

Today, there are many instruments in the arsenal of the international community for solving the regional conflicts and the efforts should be maximally concentrated for their solving, former Serbian president Boris Tadic said.

"We need to work out the understanding of each other's identity in the future, in order to avoid conflicts in different regions. When we anticipate one or anther problem, until its emergence, we act very wisely. And namely in this regard it is important to hold this forum.

The participants of the forum should demonstrate their commitment to the seeking of solutions to the problems that we can face in the future," he said speaking at the Third Baku International Humanitarian Forum.

According to him, the international community is characterized by a large number of conflicts and one can hardly expect a slightly less conflict situation in the whole world. Namely therefore, Tadic believes that it is needed to be better prepared for the solution of such conflicts in the future.

"I am a representative of Balkans. Serbia has been faced with the most terrible conflicts associated with conflicts of identity. Me - Boris Tadic, was born in Bosnia, my father is from Montenegro and grandmother is from Croatia. But I identify myself as a Serb and a European, and this is my identity. In Yugoslavia, we spoke the same language. We had a common history and experience. And in spite of this community, we were involved in a terrible conflict. What then we say about the peoples and countries that do not have communities or are located in unstable regions? That is why the international community must be prepared in advance to prevent such conflicts," the ex-president said.

The Third Baku International Humanitarian Forum began at the Heydar Aliyev Centre on Thursday.

The forum is an influential platform for discussing the most important issues of humanitarian cooperation. Azerbaijan, possessing rich traditions of intercultural, civilised and inter-confessional cooperation is an ideal place for holding events in such a format.

The forum is an influential scientific and political platform of an international scale for seeking answers to global challenges to the civilisation in the 21st Century, holding dialogues of a large spectrum, exchange of views and discussions on the most important issues of humanitarian cooperation.

The co-chairs of the forum are the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Officials, former presidents, famous scientists and artists from over 100 countries and Nobel Prize winners are participating at the Third Baku International Humanitarian Forum.
