Iran's warship named Lavan which has been overhauled joined the country's naval fleet on Nov. 30, Fars news agency reported today.

Deputy Commander of the Iranian Army Brigadier General Abdolrahim Mousavi and Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari attended the ceremony held in southern Iranian Bandar Abbas port.

Some repair and changes have been made to the warship body as well as the sailing, sonar and radar systems, weapons and information-gathering sensors. Its weapons have also been modernized.

Lavan warship is capable of carrying SH and RH helicopters as well as tanks and personnel carriers.

Iran has recently made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other countries that its military might poses no threat to other states, insisting that the Islamic Republic's defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the Navy has also been conducting patrols in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden since November 2008 in order to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.
