The condition of Israel's former prime minister Ariel Sharon has worsened, Israeli media quoted the head of the hospital as saying Friday, dpa reported.

Sharon, 85, who has been in a coma for eight years, is slowly getting worse, said Zeev Rotstein of the Tel Hashomer Sheba hospital near Tel Aviv.

Asked if Sharon's last days had come, Rotstein was quoted as saying, "Personally, I have that impression."

The hospital said Thursday that Sharon was in critical condition as the functioning of his kidneys and several other organs declined.

Sharon has been in a coma after suffering a stroke and brain haemorrhage on January 4, 2006, while campaigning for re-election.

The former general was prime minister from 2001 to 2006.
