UN Security Council to meet to discuss situation in Ukraine

The United Nations Security Council will hold a private meeting at midnight Moscow Time [20:00 GMT Friday] to discuss the situation in Ukraine, Martin Nesirky, a spokesman for the global organization's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, told journalists on Friday, ITAR-TASS reported.

Ukraine has seen its legitimate leader Yanukovich ousted in anti-government protests that took a violent turn on February 18. The country's parliament then appointed an interim head of state and approved a new government.

Yanukovich said at a news conference in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on Friday that he still remains the legitimately elected president of Ukraine.

A diplomatic source in the UN earlier told an Itar-Tass correspondent that the Security Council members had not finally agreed on the meeting.

Lithuania, which holds the Security Council's rotating presidency in February, earlier today confirmed that it had received Ukraine's request to hold a meeting on the situation in the former Soviet republic.
