Lavrov, Kerry discuss developments in Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry telephoned his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, March 8, to discuss the situation in Ukraine, ITAR-TASS reported.

"The focus was on the situation in Ukraine and Crimea. The minister and the secretary agreed to continue intensive contacts in order to facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," the Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov said the West's failure to implement the February 21 agreement signed by the Ukrainian authorities and the opposition was the reason for the current crisis in the country. "We were promised by Western partners in the context of the February 21 agreement signing that if [Ukrainian President Viktor] Yanukovich fulfilled his duties, they would moderate the other side and would not allow radical nationalists to control the process of reforms. Yanukovich did everything he had promised, but our partners did not keep their word," Lavrov said.
