Baku, Azerbaijan, April 10

Trend:

Ukraine's embassy in Azerbaijan has announced the requirements for foreigners wanting to stay in Ukraine's Crimea Autonomous Republic and Sevastopol.

Foreigners from countries with visa-free entry can now stay only if they cross the Ukrainian state border with corresponding marks on their passports or immigration cards stamped by Ukrainian border control services, according to a message from the embassy.

Failure of foreigners and persons without citizenship to observe Ukraine's legislation during the entry and stay in the Crimea Autonomous Republic and Sevastopol entails responsibilities in line with Ukrainian law, the embassy said.

This also can lead to imposition of international sanctions on those persons as individuals supporting the temporary occupation of a part of Ukraine's territory, according to Ukrainian diplomatic mission.

Foreigners from countries with visa requirements need to appeal to Ukraine's diplomatic missions or consular offices abroad in order to obtain visa entry documents.

The vast majority of residents of Crimea - 96 percent - voted to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, in a referendum held March 16.

With the exception of Russia most countries refused to recognize the referendum and its results.

On March 18 Russia and Crimea signed an agreement on Crimea as well as Sevastopol city joining the Russian Federation.

A change of power took place in Ukraine on February 22.

The Verkhovna Rada (parliament) ousted President Viktor Yanukovych from the power, changed the constitution and scheduled presidential elections for May 25. Yanukovych said that he was forced to leave Ukraine under the threat of violence, and he remains the legally elected head of state. A number of provinces in eastern and southern Ukraine, as well as the Crimea did not recognize the legitimacy of the Rada and decided on possibility of holding a referendum on the future fate of the regions.
