Commitments to EU prevent Turkey from restoring death penalty

Baku, Azerbaijan, May 2

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Turkey's commitments to the European Union (EU) prevent it from restoring the death penalty, Turkish TRT Haber TV channel quoted the country's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying on May 2.

Currently, jointly with the Justice Ministry, the Turkish government is working on the draft law on life imprisonment, according to the prime minister.

Erdogan went on to add that the last developments in Turkey (rape and murder of four children) make it necessary.

Earlier today, Turkish Health Minister Mehmet Muazzinoglu said the death penalty can be restored in the country. Currently, Turkey's government bodies are considering the issue regarding the restoration of death penalty in the country, the minister added.

Muazzinoglu said he considers this measure necessary, since four children have been raped and killed in Turley's various cities over the last two months.

Death penalty in Turkey was abolished in 2004 as part of the reforms aimed at the country's accession to the European Union.
