By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

The military commissariats may close in Turkey, Turkish Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz said on August 1, Turkish Haber7 channel reported.

Some 150 military commissariats have been closed as a whole in Turkey since 2011.

The minister stressed that closing of military commissariats will not affect the process of conscription.

Yilmaz said that Turkey has implemented a new system of conscription. The conscripts can learn about the place of their future service and other details through the "electronic government" portal.

The military commissariats in Turkey were founded during the Ottoman Empire (during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II) in 1886.

Currently, some 530 military commissariats are operating in Turkey.

Turkish armed forces consist of the Land Forces, Navy, Air Forces, Gendarmerie and Coast Guard.

The Turkish army is recruited by means of conscription. The Turkish citizens aged 20 and more are conscripted and serve a compulsory military service for six or 12 months.

After being discharged from the military service, the Turkish citizens are considered liable for military service and remain in the reserve until the age of 45.

The Turkish men aged 16 to 60 and women aged 20 to 46, capable of bearing arms, are conscripted in time of war in accordance with the law.

In October 2013, the Turkish parliament lowered the upper limit of the compulsory military service period from 15 months to 12 months.
