Georgian Honorary Consuls accuse Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze of limiting their powers.

Around 17 of 22 consuls sent letters to the chairman of the Parliament and Prime Minister August 14. They accuse the minister of violating a number of international conventions.

A number of limitations for honorary consuls will come into force at the initiative of the minister from September 1, according to the letter.

These changes, in particular, involve removing the vehicle registration plates, deprivation of the parking places at the airports.

"Such restrictions and lowering the status of honorary consuls will definitely worsen the activity of the diplomatic corps and negatively impact on the activity," according to the letter.

Panjikidze stressed that honorary consuls' claims are incomprehensible.

"The foreign ministry approved a roadmap for diplomats in accordance with the Vienna Convention," she said. "According to it, all privileges and benefits will apply to honorary consuls while implementing their duties. I do not understand why they wrote such a letter."

She expressed confidence that Georgian honorary consuls will have no questions after they thoroughly read the amendments.
