EU does not recognize Abkhazia elections

The EU Sunday said it does not recognize presidential elections being held today in the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia, KUNA reported.

"We recall that the European Union does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework within which these elections have taken place," said a Spokesperson for EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, in a statement.

"The European Union supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognized by international law," it added.

The snap elections are taking place after Aleksandr Ankvab, Abkhazia's president, resigned in June following a political crisis. Four candidates are contesting the elections.

Abkhazia declared its separation from Georgia after the Russian-Georgian war in 2008 but only a few countries have recognized its declaration of independence.
