In its statements on the Kyrgyz presidential elections, the OSCE mission stated its disappointment regarding the elections process, head of the group of temporary observers, Canadian senator Consiglio Di Nino, said at a press-conference on July 24.

The mission stressed some positive points but stated its disappointment as current elections did not correspond with the European view's key criteria on open democratic elections, Di Nino said.

"In the elections there was no division between the party and the authorities," he said.

He said that these elections seriously undermined trust in a fair election process.

Di Nino said that during elections local media broadcasting was captious in that candidates were not presented in the way current Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was.

The senator said that the function of international observers is only in connection with the election process. He refrained from political remarks on Bakiyev's reelection. He said that the Kyrgyz people as a whole must draw the conclusion. 

Head of the mission of long-term observers of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Radmila Sekerinska, said that the mission's report is accurate. But she did not say whether she would agree with opposition statement recognizing the current elections as invalid.  

She said that progress had not been demonstrated although the Kyrgyz elections did correspond with the OSCE approach.

But she agreed with Di Nino that in terms of discrepancies the only issue was key criteria.
