Uzbek Senate to hold first meeting Jan. 25-26

The Uzbek Central Election Commission approved a resolution to hold the first meeting of the Senate (upper house of the Uzbek parliament) on January 25-26.


The resolution of the Central Election Commission was published in the official press of the republic.


According to the Constitution and electoral laws of the country, the first meeting of the new staff of the upper house of the parliament is convened by the CEC.

"It is necessary to convene the first meeting of the Senate of the Uzbek Parliament in Tashkent on January 25-26, 2010," the document said.


The agenda of the first meeting of the Senate will include issues related to the election of a  chairman of the Senate and his deputies, the formation of committees of the Senate and the election of their chairmen.

According to the Uzbek Electoral Law, 84 members of the Senate were elected among these MPs during joint sessions of MPs of representative agencies of state authority of Karakalpakstan, Uzbek regions and Tashkent. About 16 Senate members are appointed by Uzbek President Islam Karimov.

The bicameral parliament in Uzbekistan was formed in 2005. Over 100 MPs work in the upper house - the Senate but 120 MPs work in the Legislative Chamber.

MPs are elected for five years.
