The international conference on water resources in the region was held in the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia with headquarters in Ashgabat.
Representatives of the region, the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, as well as the UN executive secretary Jan Kubis, EU Special Representative Pierre Morel, World Bank Regional Director Motoo Konishi attended the event.
Water management and a recent visit of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the region were discussed. The activity of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, established in 1993, was discussed.
The task of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, initiated by the five states in the region is the search for sources of funding for improving the environmental and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea.
The work over the third program of actions to assist affected areas in 2011-2015 is underway.
Previous programs were designed to establish water communication of Syr Darya basin and improvement of drinking water in the Aral Sea region.
