Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 June / corr. Trend I. Alizade/ The International Atomic Energy Agency of the United Nations (IAEA) believes that the nuclear energy can be an additional and alternative energy source for Azerbaijan in the future. "The construction of nuclear power stations in Azerbaijan is very promising as the nuclear energy is going through revival process," Yan Shuler, the deputy head of the IAEA on technical cooperation said to Trend on 11 June in Baku.
IAEA delegation led by Shuler held talks in Baku on 11 June. The agreement has been reached between National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and IAEA on implementation of two projects on construction of research reactor in Azerbaijan. One of the projects is connected with the source of complex and universal gamma irradiation and the other – with the the construction of nuclear research reactor.
IAEA gave an official permission to construct first nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijani government also gave permission for the construction which is expected to begin in 2009 and completed in 2010.
The Institute for Radiation Problems has developed a set of proposals on the construction of nuclear power plant in Azerbaijan and has introduced it to the Government. The Institute believes it to be important to establish alternative energy source in Azerbaijan.
"Many countries think of extending possibilities or construction of new nuclear power stations," the IAEA official said.
According to Shuler, IAEA is prepared to assist in educating specialist in nuclear energy in Azerbaijan. "If Azerbaijan accepts it, IAEA is ready to give its advices on educating specialist for Azerbaijan, assessment of technology and using equipments. It is the government who should make the final decision," he said.
