Chairman of Azerbaijani parliamentary committee regards necessary to convene congress on language

Azerbaijan, Baku, July 29 / Trend , A.Huseynbala/

The chairman of the Azerbaijani parliamentary committee considers necessary to convene a congress on the language.

"If we have created a committee on the language, it must operate. The congress on the language must be convened to regulate the activities of this committee," the Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Committee on Culture, Nizami Jafarov told Trend .

On Aug. 1, 2001 Azerbaijan shifted from the Cyrillic to the Latin script letters. On Aug. 9, 2001 Azerbaijani National Leader Heydar Aliyev decreed to establish the Day of the Azerbaijani Alphabet and Azerbaijani language. Under the decree, Azerbaijan shifted from the Cyrillic to the Latin script letters. Since then, the country marks Aug. 1 as the Day of the Azerbaijani Alphabet and Azerbaijani language.

Jafarov said the largest value of the congress on the language could become reports on linguistics sounded in it. "Of course, these issues are regularly discussed at the Institute of Linguistics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Moreover, it is necessary to bring the problems of our language, linguistic science, in particular the language of the press to the attention of the general public," the parliamentarian said.

The chairman of the committee believes the language of the media should be largely discussed in the coming congress. "In this regard, it is too necessary to convene the congress on the language," said Jafarov.

There is a presidential decree to develop the Azerbaijani language as the state, many laws and regulations, the parliamentarian said. "Over last 15 years, the Azerbaijani language has really become the state language. Many our senior officials who did not speak the Azerbaijani language earlier currently speaks this language. But despite this, there are still many problems to be solved, although the beginning of the process can be described as quite effective, "said the chairman of the committee.

Jafarov said one of key problems is connected with creating textbooks for universities. "The books in the Azerbaijani language on technical subjects leave much to be desired. Our language achieved the greatest success in publicism. The whole society has been involved in this process," said the chairman of the committee.

The parliamentarian said there are problems in protection of speech, language and culture. "This greatly affects mass media. I think that a standard literary language of the society will be higher after a certain time," said Jafarov.
