To organize Azerbaijani judokas' participation in the Youth European Judo Championships to be held in Yerevan on Sept. 9-14, Youth and Sports Minister, Azad Rahimov, will visit Armenia before the championships, the ministry told Trend .
During the visit, an agreement is expected to be signed providing for the Azerbaijani sportsmen's security in Armenia.
"The main issue for us is providing our judokas with security in Yerevan. If the decision is made, either I personally, or my deputy, will visit Yerevan to check the terms and security measures," Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister told journalists earlier.
Rahimov said a meeting will be held on the Azerbaijani judokas' participation in the European Championship.
Together with Rahimov, Labor and Social Protection Minister Fuzuli Alakbarov, who is President of the Azerbaijan Judo Federation, will pay an official visit to the country.
A paper is planned to be signed between the Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister, the European Judo Federation, the European Committee for Judo and the European Olympic Committee, as well as the relevant organizations in Armenia.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
