Protected areas to increase in Azerbaijan: official of ministry

Azerbaijan will increase the number of protected areas.

Azerbaijan will increase the number of protected areas. The National Park Samur-Yalama will be created in the near. In addition, it is planned to establish Gizilagaj Coastal National Park in Gizilagaj Reserve, said Hikmat Alizade, Deputy Director of Department on development of specially protected natural zones and protection of biological diversity of the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry.

At present, Azerbaijan has eight national parks. Currently the ministry conducts a seminar on the World Day for the Protection of Animals in the Shirvan National Park. The aim of the seminar is to call the public to protect animals through public events organized by nature lovers.
The park's area is 65,000 hectares. About 8.000 antelope and 34 species of birds listed in the Red Book are inhabited in its area.
