"Neither peace nor war" can continue forever in the South Caucasus, All-Georgia Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II said today at a meeting in Baku with Caucasus Muslims Sheikhulislam head Haji Allahshukur Pashazade.
"We live in a very difficult time," he said. "Although we have always dreamed of independence, our expectations were not entirely justified. Azerbaijan's and Georgia's territorial integrity was violated. We will not allow Azerbaijan's integrity to be further violated. We will do everything we can to restore it."
He lauded the efforts of Sheikhulislam and the Azerbaijani and Georgian presidents to restore peace and stability in the region.
"Georgia and Azerbaijan share a common fate. In many ways our destiny is the same," Pashazade said.
However, according to Sheikhulislam, some forces hope to sow discord among these nations.
"Although these are minor incidents, they are provoked by forces wanting to sow discord," Pashazade said.
A major problem for Georgia and Azerbaijan is the violation of territorial integrity, he added.
"It is no secret that serious problems in the Caucasus are related to Armenian territorial claims against its neighbors. I believe you will make every effort to establish peace in the Caucasus and eliminate separatism," said the Caucasus Muslims spiritual leader.
