"We do not have any information about any activities to be held on Student Day, Dec. 7," Police Chief General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam was quoted as saying by the Ilna news agency. "But the police will stop all illegal meetings and rallies on this day." The statement was made at the conference "Police, Security and Prospects Until 2025."
The number of police officers on the roads will increase on Student Day in case of necessity, Moghaddam said.
"Police are not receiving training about how to act on Student Day, and I cannot say in advance what measures will be taken," he added.
Five months after the coup organized by the U.S. in Iran in 1953, Tehran University students launched large-scale protests to support the authorities. On Dec. 8, 1953, the military opened fire on students entering the university building. Three were killed. Iranian students have celebrated the date annually ever since as Student Day.
