A prisoner sentenced to life for killing the son of the former executive chief of the Shamkir district has gone on a hunger strike.

Vugar Aliyev has already refused to eat five days at the Gobustan Prison, his mother Malahat Ismayilova told Trend today.

She said her son is on strike because he was arrested illegally and given an unjust sentence.

Ismayilov also said her son has several health problems, and added that doctors are not supervising his hunger strike.

Former Shamkir Region Excutive Chief Aslan Aslanov's son Ruslan was killed in May 2003.

Lamiya Guliyeva and Vugar Aliyev were convicted of murder.

Guliyev was sentenced to 10 years in prison and Aliyev to life.

Aliyev sent a letter to prison management telling them he was beginnging a hunger strike, Justice Ministry Penitentiary Service PR Department Head Mehman Sadigov told Trend .

"He is not complaining about the conditions of his detention. His complaint is related to too his sentence, which he considers too severe," Sadigov said.
