St. Petersburg hosts Heydar Aliyev memorial evening

An evening of organ music with the participation of Azerbaijani composer Arif Mirzoyev was held this week at the St. Petersburg D. Shostakovich Academic Philharmonic Society Great Hall in honor of the country's former all-national leader Heydar Aliyev.

The evening was organized by the Azerbaijani Consulate General in St. Petersburg and National and Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijanis in Russia's Northern Capital. Honored Russian People's Artist Daniel Zaretsky also performed in the concert, the consulate general said.

At the event musician and founder of Azerbaijani polyphonic music, double Russian State Prize nominee Arif Mirzoyev celebrated his sixty-fifth birthday.

The event was attended by representatives of the St. Petersburg administration, diplomats, public figures, youth and representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora.

A photo exhibition consisting from Aliyev's archives titled "A Part of My soul in Russia" was also organized in the Philharmonic Society's foyer.

State Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Alexander Prokhorenko addressed the guests on behalf of St. Petersburg's mayor.

He stressed Aliyev's outstanding merits in developing Azerbaijan, his talents as a politician and a state figure, and his wisdom and willingness to devote his energy to developing the motherland.

Prokhorenko also stressed that St. Petersburg is closely linked with Aliyev's life. He studied in the city and often paid official and private visits to Russia's cultural capital.
