Azerbaijan to prepare proposals for settlement of relations between media outlets and law enforcement agencies

Proposals for the settlement of relations between the country's media outlets and law enforcement agencies will be prepared and submitted to consideration to the Interior Ministry in Azerbaijan.

The decision was adopted on the basis of discussions at the event on "Freedom of information and settlement of the relations between the media outlets and law enforcement agencies", organized jointly by the OSCE, the Interior Ministry and the Democratic Journalists League.

The current situation in the sphere of relations between the police and the media outlets was discussed at the roundtable. Interior Ministry Press Service Head Ehsan Zahidov, Central Police Department Spokesman Galib Arif, the administrations of Police Departments of Nasimi, Sabail and Yasamal districts of Baku and media representatives took place at the discussions.

Media representatives said they cannot obtain from individual police departments operative information about incidents, sometimes suffer from police pressure, and sometimes media outlets meet bias attitude while receiving information.

The police urged lack of professionalism of journalists, as well as media representatives' participation in the illegal mass actions as direct participants, complicates the cooperation between the police and the media outlets.

The participants in the discussions sounded proposals on appointing in police departments peoples able to work with the press, ensuring the accreditation of journalists working with the interior agencies, organizing a monthly press briefings, particularly about the incidents evolving much resonance, and offering every facility to journalists reporting on the activities of the police.

Democratic Journalists League Chairman Yadigar Mammadli said the proposals will be submitted to the Interior Minister. The events to develop the relations between the police and the media outlets will continue in future.

The roundtable was held within the "Settlement of relations between media outlets and law enforcement agencies" project. Training and workshops with the participation of journalists from the region and representatives of law enforcement agencies were held under the project in the northern, southern and lowland regions of Azerbaijan. The project aims to find solutions to existing problems and to settle relations between the media and law enforcement agencies.
